Here are some examples of how to showcase Motion Graphics on boards. I like the middle one best. I think it would be good to make a layout taht I apply to all of my motion work, so that people will understand the format and be able to navigate easily.

Modern Music Videos

Can't seem to log in to greasetheremake.blogspot.com, so I will post some of my research here.

Here are some videos of Summer Nights posted on Youtube. I am looking for videos that show it in a different way, and what worked and what did not.

Here is one done all in sign language. Interesting execution, the different set pieces and changes are more organic and creative than most that I have seen.

Not that innovative, but in the first chorus, the editing between the two groups is nice. It makes for a faster paced piece, different from the first....

Vertov-Kino Pravda

I went to the Tate Modern this week and was very impressed by the exhibition of Rodchenko and Popova. I especially liked the advertising that they did.

Also, there was a video playing by Vertov, with the title sequence by Rodchenko that caught my attention. I have been looking into Vertov's work, since it has such a mysterious quality and vision.

This is a video that I made this weekend. Just editing some old footage that I shot last summer. I want to compile more of my footage to make a larger music video, that is like a video diary of my time in back of a camera.

Here is the final movie that I will be sending into D&AD. I still will want to fix a couple of things in it, but for sake of time I must be sending it off today (if not for my own sanity).

I want to try adding lighting in it, and camera length of focus, as Jon my tutor suggested. Other than that, cool beans, lots of good work. Can't believe I managed, I am pleased with it, and think I made a good use of my time.

Here is the leader that I have done. I want a swipe with it, and maybe the colors bars before the numbers. I also liked how there was a flickering of the titles and scribbles before hand, also something that I want to implement.

I think it will give a nice intro into the music video, almost stand as an establishing shot, getting the viewer ready for what they are going to see.

These two represent Monkey trip under the eastern ocean. There he meets the dragon king (the scales on the interior of the second one) and goes to the crystal palace where he gets the Iro rod, his weapon for the length of the opera.
This represents Tripitaka, the monk. There is a Buddhist monk with the beads superimposed over the top. For the colors I looked at a a mini film on what the colors of 2009 are going to be. In a certani part of it, they had a selection of earthy colors, which I thought worked well for Tripitaka. I got a linen material scanned in, with the earthy purple colors and the ying yang.
This is Sandy, who is half pig half human. Ii superimposed a pig's mask on the head of my brother, and the rake is his weapon.

Here are the mostly finished images. I have two yet to do, and I want to touch up some of them. Also, they have all been inverted, like the last set. Hmmm, technical stuff.
This one is the part of the play iwth the flesh eating skeletons, what appears to be the blue part is actually red meat...
This one is sandy, the guy has a red beard, like Sandy supposedly does. He wears a necklace of monk's skulls. I chose Damian Hirst's skulls as they bring a modern feel to it. The other blue textures are sand.
This is the mountain of friut and flowers, where monkey is born. There is clouds and the 'falling rock sign' with flowers and fruit.
This is monkey being born. He was born from a rock that had an egg inside of it. So on the outer layer, there is the rock with a mokey silhouette in it, then a layer of egg shells, and a chinese monkey mask in the centre.
This is representing the scene with Buddha's hand closing around Monkey for 500 years. There is Buddah on the outside, with Buddhist hand signals. Then there is a monkey jumping, like monkey did in the play, and Buddha's fist. Lastly there is the 'D' in the middle, which is 500 in roman numerals, representing the five hundred years that monnkey has to stay in the stone.

This Week

So, dum dee dum dum. This week has been a week of mnay ideas, with nothing really sticking. I got out a projector on Wednesday, tried to do some body projections, and ended up with two very sore eyes. The look was not what I wanted and if I was to get the right effect it would mean managing many people and lots of face paint, so I decided it wasn't for this project.

I finally settled on the idea of zooming through the various scnes of the Opera, with a combination of Buddhist imagery. I did some scans last week of chinese japanese and indian patterns, and in going through the chinese ones I found many that were circular, elborate but linear (meaning that I could fill in the various cavities with my own images and patterns). After doing a couple of them I remembered in doing a tutorial on how to earth zoom about parenting the layers all together, so that if you scaled the one on top up, all the others would get larger and it would appear to be sooming thorugh (instead of key framing each ofht elayers to go together). I am now working on filling in the circular things with images of the opera. It is going to be the patterns like in many of the enlightenment videos I saw on you tube, but with images telling the story of it.

I am still establishing what kind of style they will be. I like the combination of modern day items with story (east meets west). I need to make sure that the speed of it is correct, very nice transition sin the music, so I need to make sure all of the images are well timed...

Today I have been researching key images for chinese and buddhist art. I found some great images and symbols for the piece. I found the lotus to be a key element in buddhism, which also lends itself to the music quite well. The harpsicord, or whatever that noise is, seems like a flower opening.

The picnic basket makes an easy transition on the eyes. I have always liked that part.

I'm sure I have already put this up, but this video has amazing transitions between scenes. Something that I tried to emulate in one of my last projects, but did not have the time to do. Hopefully it will prove to be fruitful for this one!

Inspiring

Been a couple of days since my last post. To be honest I was having a hard time rapping my head around the brief, the music, and what I really wanted to get out of this project.

I have been doodling in my sketchbook, trying to figure out what I would want to spend my time doing. Looked at a bunch of music videos, read some stuff on 'enlightenment', trying to get a feel of the undertone of the book and character motivation at this point in the story. It is a very strange song, even translated it does not give much insight into the characters. I went to waterstones to buy 'Monkey' the book, sat down and tried to find the right point of the book so that I could read that and the previous chapters, to try and get a feel of the setting, but it didn't have it. I looked on every page! At least I read it in the store and didn't buy it (although it will be a nice read one day).

I looked at enlightenment images and music videos, found some pretty funky stuff, very low budget, but I like that grungy quality. I have been on motionographer a billion times, and found nothing that really caught my eye, in terms of inspiration. Just went on, however, and found this sight:http://www.sant.at/mtv/SantaMotion_AcessoMTV.mov. Really really cool. I like the transitions, I like the abstractions, and I think this is the direction that I am going to head in for my piece. I was thinking of doing a half animation half real time, but I was not feeling it. It all seemed very bait and predictable. I tried to work out how it could be done subtley but I really can't get my head round it.

I think this type of style offers mystery, and the non-linear narrative shows that it is not only a journey that the charcters were on, but a mental journey, one that is not bound to one direction. Wow, that sounds so deep. I am going to explore how I can make this work....

Did I mention that I downloaded the "Forbidden Kingdom" with Jackie Chan and Jet Li? """"""""""""""""based""""""""""""""""""" on the story of the monkey king, thought it would help get to understand the story better, and I feel less like a human being now. The movie took a little part of my soul that I am not sure I will get back.

Looking around for enlightenment

I am currently looking about the web for how others have shown enlightenment in animation. I am trying to figure out what the focus of the msuic video is going to be, whether the spiritual side of it, the journey the characters, I am not sure...

Text morph

I did some scans tody at the library, btu my internet is lacking in speedage, so I'll post them when it goes a bit faster.

I want the text to come out of the character's mouth and morph from chinese to chinese roman alphabet to english. I was a-surfin' looking for this and the FIRST thing I clicked on was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Someone wanted to change something in chinese to english by morphing it on creative cow. Then someone asked to see the images, and then did it for him, and uploaded the files to show how he had done it, including the AE file! I got to go into it and see how it was contructed, so now I need to find the original chinese characters and try it out for myself.

Okay, before I get carried away

My thoughts are going 1000 miles per hour, so I am going to lay down what I have been thinking so that I can get back to it:

I was between doing the Edward Lear project and Monkey 'Pigsy in Space' video for D&AD, and have settled on Pigsy, for a couple of reasons:

It would all be similar style and accomplishing one narrative, which I like.

I researched it before the last project and have already laid some ground wrok for what I want which is:
Using imagery that combines east and west, which appeals to me muchos; focusing on upping my skilllls in music videos, and I love Monkey Journey to the West.

This morning was when I was making the decision and I came upon the blog of Ray Tindori of Court 13, who did the "Evident Utensil' for Chairlift. I have been thinking about doing something similar, although lacked the knowledge of how to do so, and I got super super jealous when I saw the video that I had not done it first. I saw the video a couple of weeks ago and peroused the internet in search of how it was done and today I actually applied myself to finding ohow it was done, and got the link to a blog with Ray Tintori walking us step by step how to:

Anywhoos. I like the Kanye video as well, a bit more clean. For My video I want it to tell a story, by using images. I thought and thought and thought and decided that datamosh was not right for the entire video. I don't like the idea of ripping off someone's work completely, for it is a style added when there is not that much content. Datamoshing seems like a western art form, thus I think it will be a nice addition to the music video, like in concentrated pockets of the video, instead of at every transition.

Now I am pretty much caught up on this thing, back to the board.

Here is the final animation for the meeting on Tuesday. Took me two days non-stop to do, I started losing touch with reality from staring and interacting with only a screen. But I am glad I did it and got it done, was worth it.

Here are the rollovers for the website. Although I have done more visuals, they will be part of the motion piece. I have boiled it down to six categories that people will fall into: design for print, web design, illustration, motion, photography, and interactive. Although there are sub layers to the categories, this is how people will fall into categories on the website. Perhaps this will be a replacement for the book that normally gets lost or not achknowledged. The money normally spent on making the book can be spent on making a website, that is easily accessible and immediate. Get companies and people to see things immediately.

Here is the poster and calendar. The 'brand' is simple and effective, so it can work on many levels, whether that be a letterhead or on a poster it. I hope it is clear enough, it is d-sign ('dee'sign=design, like what we are studying, design, ya know?)

Under is the either viral or mail sent calendar, which is Mark Wahlberg without his shirt. On the back there is a shitty calendar, which above says 'Don't forget Mark, your calendar'. Yuk yuk yuk. Metaphors help people remember whilst learning, so they should also help keep Nottingham Trent on the mind.

I brainstormed what else would be an element to design, checked out a G.D.book from the library and made a neat little list. I like this idea, as it is almost making fun of ourselves, not taking it too seriously.

Here are the different categories with their pictures. These would be in the viral, as well as in the degree book. Because we are designing for designers I thought this would be a good way to get their attention. It is almost a secret code that only designers would get, think it could be quite fun.

Made this as I was brainstorming ideas about graphic design last night...

I am a big fan of medical 1970's esque design. I love phrenology images, and thought this captures of cool side of graphic design. What a graphic designer' head would look like...

This is put against a background. I saw in a design brochure this morning in tutorial that I really liked. Called 'freight' nice composition and style. Modern, but funky. It would live in a studio appartment in an up and coming neighbourhood, if I was to go as far as to anthropomorphise it.

I want my style to be modern-old fashion. Want it to be mature, yet playful, sue old images in a new design kind of way. I am still trying to figure out what that would look like, but it sounds great in my head.

Taking the words literally, just playing around with the subjects...

This one may be too abstract. It is supposed to be mask and key frame... this one is still on the drawing board...
This works well. It's cute, very GD. This one works much better than the other one... I like the pattern background (although would be colour coordinated to match the interior of 'room'), I like the type, the composition. good tings.

Maybe they will be inside of the phrenology head in the rooms, or maybe a separate piece.

I have been thinking about the different rooms interacting together. I read 'behind the scenes' on the hbo voyeur, lots of choreography, special effects and editing to make it run smoothly. The various rooms interacting to create something may be too ambitious for a two week project. My idea was to use live footage superimposed, but I am going to brainstorm other ways of getting it done.

Mike and I are working on the project together. We brain stormed some ideas today and came up with doing an interactive phrenology type piece. It is based on the mind being an idea machine.

Here is an image with which we shall be working:
We want the various parts of the mind to become synonymous with design. A certain section for typography, a certain one for editorial. Tonight we are going to think of ideas and (wait for it) visual metaphors for the various areas of design. Then the idea is to do a kind of red house interactive approach, where we zoom into the head and the inner 'rooms' are revieled to show the 'factory' that is going on... good good times...

Here is a test for a 'brand' of mirrors into windows. This is a composium of various images I scanned in last week. I'm not crazy about this, but I like the style, I have been playing around with the various combinations of images to find the style. I want slightly dark, I see vignette. I want to do something similar to the 'ideation', with collage elements.

I was playing scrabble on friday night, and I thought of using the letters in my piece...

I made my own, although I hate how similar they are. But I do think it would work well in the piece....

From what I take from the quote "the point of education is to make mirrors into windows' in regard to graphic design, is that we are able to not just see a reflection, like most people, but see opportunity. In this sense I am thinking of making a slightly abstract piece, it will relate to graphic design, but not obviously. Using the signs and symbols of graphic design (kerning, typefaces, layouts, rulers, ect.) that come out of everyday objects.

The other pieces are variations trying to find a 'dark' way of doing it. I am not finished in the least with the idea, but here is my beggining.

Influence Peter Blake

I found in the 1950's book that I got from the library a collage/painting by Peter Blake. I love the style and think this could work well for a collage world that is travelled into through the mirror.

Here is a video promoting the gd festival in breda.

Here is one in Barcelona. I like the style of drawings, but it is a weak piece of graphics, not fitting music, the styles don't match with the acid rain and the new graphis mixed with old images. Could have been done much better.

Again, part of the same campaign to promote the Offf design show in Barcelona, similar style of mixing old with new, but the colors or something about them doesnt match, and it comes off looking cheaply done.

Just spent over an hour in the library looking for images and styles that I like. I came across American color photography, fifties images, sean scully's color of time, wim wenders written in the west and ernst haas all of which I am scanning in right now.

I am thinking of doing a conceptual video, like the link I put below in the last post. I came across the quote 'The point of education is to turn mirrors into windows'. I think it would make a nice subject for the degree show, as it makes people think about what it means and would stick in their minds. Also the imagery that could be used would be awe-some. Fun times, like.

The variety of my shots prove dto be my downfall, as I got hom eon Saturday I realised there were very few elements that I had kept the same, and tried to mesh them together using 'blinks' and opacity to match them. I then vowed that I would never be an editor and crossed it off my list of possible things I would like to spend time doing.

I realised that if I wanted it the way I saw it in my head I would have to go back. Sunday it was closed, so I spent sunday doing the final of the fluid(see fluid post). Monday came and I went to Uni to print off my images for the book, and it was snowing and I was the abominable snowman. I printed them off, bought some spray mount, cut them down to the right size, and went out into the snow to glue my frozen fingers together with spray mount. (In fact if you look in the final version of the video, my thumb has spray mount residue on it.)

I then set out for Wallaton Day 2. Got there and found the the families of Saturday now chose to play outside in the snow which worked well for me. I quickly got down to business attaching the camera and walked through it, in a fluid motion, for I had decided the path before I got there, and what actions I would take and where. It went well, except I couldn't see what the camera saw, so I had to do it, and look back to see what worked and what didn't.

I ran into one problem, when I thought someone was being friendly in asking me if I was making an art video, so I tried to not notice the person in the film. She kept talking to me, which is when I realised she was being a bit too friendly, or not friendly at all just, and was an employee of the manor house and was telling me off for bringing drinks in. It turned out okay, expect that this was the only take that got the book how I wanted it, so I had a bit of editing to do.

I am uploading the best runs that I did. I also had not planned on having establishing shots, but because it was such a nice snowy day I wanted the footage anyways. I went on a walk in the par behind the manor house and got the first establishing shot.

I then progressed home, after seeing a guy go down the hill on a blow up raft being pulled by the leads of his dogs face-plant into the snow. He was laughing, his friends were laughing, and I was laughing. It was a moment, I tell ya.

Monday night I sat down and edited as best I could the footage. The music I had already known I was going to use, after doing that huge search for the music to the fluid piece. It is one of my favourite songs, and fits GREAT with the theme. Billlie Holliday -You Go To My Head. It is fitting because it is the kind of music I could see being played in the house, and perfectly ironic. Loof it.

First Person View

The last thing that I left on the blog was the camera tests with my digital in my room. Since then I rented out a camera from uni, for higher quality, but because it was more bulky the angle did not appear to be like first person view. This resulted in using my housemates camera, which worked really well, surprisingly good quality for such a small toy.

I then storyboarded more carefully and made a list of things that I would like to have in the piece for clues. The setting is an old man's affluent study/library. I used one day to scout various locations around nottingham. I went to a many different nice pubs, like the Orange tree, Pitcher and Piano, Malt Cross, walked all over the lace market, and even found myself inside the Galleries of Justice. This was a strange turn of events and freaked me out, and for the rest of the day I was really jumpy.

Anywhoo, thought that I would have to do a mashup of different locations and play with the video color. After a tutorial on thursday with Jon he gave me some good ideas for filming, which included a bookshop on mansfield, persian carpet stoor, orange tree for sitting down portion. Also on thursday I was talking about my project with someone who suggested Wollaton Hall, which made a little lightbulb come on over my head, to the amazement of people around me. I planned to go on Saturday.

Friday night I thought some props would really make it, such as a tea cup, because then the audience could see both of my hands moving, which looked sweet in my practice tests. I also needed a book that I could glue my pages in. Saturday morning in getting dressed I wanted to make it as believable as possible so I (*sigh*) cut my nails really short, and looked everywhere for my red sweater. Lester wears a red sweater in the film, and I wanted this to be one of the clues. I realised that I had brought it back home because I never wear it, so I settled ona yellow sweater that looked slightly grandfather-like.

I then went down and made tea to put in a bottle to guerrilla pour into a tea cup. Melted the first bottle, so figured it was better to leave it outside for a bit before putting it into the next bottle. Got it, and a tea spoon and set out.

I went down Mansfield, stopping in a charity sho to look for a tea cup and saucer, and low and behold there was a red sweater for the bargain price of a pound, so I was happy like a little camper.

I continued down mansfield, thinking I would get the book after, because I wanted to film in there. I figured I would get the tea cup and saucer at John Lewis, not bothering to look into Daphne's handbag or any of the other vintage shops. I went to John Lewis and thought I could do better with the prices, and set back up Mansfield (long) to look for the tea cup and saucer and book. I looked into each other shops that I had passed looking for the perfect one, but they were not what I wanted to spend, nor the right style. Soooooooo I continued up to the book store, picked out the perfect book, that looked old, was not xpensive, and had the page size closest to a4 to get the best view of in the movie. Found it, and did not have the tea cup, so couldnt film there then. I asked if I could film another day...blahblah blah they said yes.

I went BACK to John Lewis and picked one that looked delicate, like it would belong to the house in my head. Got it, and continued out to the bus stop.

Got to Wallaton Hall (which I had never been to before) and to my surprise found every family in Nottingham had decided to go there as well. I found the best room for the piece, and faffed for about 20 minutes, building up the courage to take out my tea cup and tea, attach a camera to my neck, and walk around as if I was an old man, alone in my study. I did a couple of practice runs and tired the book and motion in different places, trying to avoid people that would walk in the room, to get the shots.

Swinging progress

The swinging project was the one was the throw away one. It was not hard coming up with the idea, for I had found the images int he first couple of days of the project. I spent the time that I had animating it, with adjusting the little tweaks. Instead of having each frame a different one, I thought a nice touch was connecting each frame by using the objects rotation to see other names. It fits great with the music, haunting, yet almost childlike.

Here is the final version. If I could change anything I would have had access to better quality images. The main puppet, which the title appears with, is great. I got it form the library and spent hours and hourse tryigt ofind images that would match it. I looked in every puppet marionette and childtoys book (literally) as well as many illustrators that might have similar style. I dont have the strong a vocabulary when it comes to illustration, which is something that I would like to further. I also redrew one of the images, and tried to match the style of the original puppet, but I am not a strong colorer in photoshop or illustrator and the style did not match, so I left it how it is, and move the really low quality images to the background so that they are not that noticed.

There are a couple of tweaks yet to do on it, but I am happy for the most part.

Fluid 2

Here is the next step that I took with the fluid piece. I wanted to make it look like the camera was zooming in on the line, but I dont like the result, it looks sloppy and very after-effectsy. It is also a very tedious process, with the line moving and the camera. I spent much of my time masking and changing the position, which was not gratifying at all. Everytime the music was not in sync I had to remask and reposition everything. The idea was there, but in practice I need more skills.

The next thing I did was to make the lines bigger. It was difficult to animate and place perfectly such a small line, and I thought it was make it more obvious and fluid if I used a larger line. I had already been trying to animate it for a couple of days, making no progress, so I decided to try and change and see if I got further. The leading into the clock is in the original storyboard. It signifies the 'cinderella effect' of getting into JOhn Malkovich's head before midnight. I tried many different approaches to making this work. I had lanned to have the line feed into the '1' of the clock, purposely making the '1' into an 'i' so that the line would go smoothly. I masked it, opacityed it, tried everything I could think of, but in the end the feeding into the black outline of the lcock worked best for the section.

Finally, it had been about 5 days since I started animating it, and I was going nowhere, fast. I decided to delete everything I had done, and see if there was another way of getting in all the key images that I had connected to the characters, in an simpler, faster way. I thought a clearing of the project and my head would be beneficial, and it was. I got this out in about 4 hours. Although I loved the idea of how it would be in my head, this works well as a title sequence. After my tutorial yesterday I got the feedback that if this was this so called 'real-life' then I would have done enough to get my ideas down, and then pull out my animation team to go through with it, so I am pleased with the final result.

In the last week I have been in production mode. I got feedback in the last tutorial about my projects and got some clearer vision and went with it.

FLUID

I storyboarded the fluid t.s. to get a clearer idea, and tried to animate it. The idea is to have a kind of "I met the Walrus" type animation, which flows seamlessly to the various clues of the movie.

In practice, however, I misplaced my specialised team of animators, so it proved a lot harder than I have originally thought. More tedious in masking and geting everything to flow. I tried all week, but kept getetting stuck at the same time. Here are the first couple of versions:

The t.s. is image based. I wanted images that were slightly medical looking, that were creepy in the way they were a mix of puppet and human, like John Malkovich is in the film. I got very lucky to find the perfect book in the library which had all the images, and proceeded to give them a gritty quality, by using different paper textures in the background and playing with cutting them out in photoshop and blending mode-multiply. Then I took them into aftereffects and played around with them.

The song is Sebastien Schuller, a french artist. I wanted something ironic, if that makes sense. Something that seems light, but can be seen as dark as well. This pieces music took a very long time to find, looking through nearly all the songs on my library (over 4000) and looking online at different composers and artists. I considered Black Moth Superrainbow, Waxpoetic, Explosions in the Sky, 65 Days of Static, Johnny Greenwood, Aimee Mann and Moondog. None of these had the right feel. I was looking for more I also was looking forsomething modern, half electric half classical, for an edgy feel. I settled on Sebastien Schuller which was nice to animate to, although it is a bit lighter than I wanted, it works well.

The first one is where I got in the first couple of days of animating it. I wanted to make it seem like a camera rostrum in aftereffects, with animation connecting them. I don't like the camera in aftereffects, which is an understatement. You need to make the layers 3d, but as soon as you do, they start acting like they they want to show off how 3-d they actually are and don't stay put. This first tests shows what I mean after cameron diaz section, when you can tell its in 3d, instead of a 2d surface.

This one came out too high, as I had attached it to my face. Even though eye length, it did not capture how I really see.

The camera was under my chin for this video, and worked pretty well. Good movement and good effect.

This tested how to create looking around. I tried to move my body and make it look like it was my eyes that were moving. Not very convincing, but with practice this could be very effective.

My camera's shutter is broken and I have to manually open it. I forgot to do it when I was filming, but the effects of a soft vignette worked well to make it look like an eye looking through...

Here is one that I started working on this weekend. I think that it works well with the swipes and I like the slight movement forward of the camera.

The music is essential to the credits, because the swipes should move with the music, so it took me a long time to settle on a track. I wanted one that was happy yet sad, a bit ironic, so that the audience didn't know what to make of the song or atmosphere. Something deep and forboding would not have worked, like beethoven. I also looked at the music of Icelandic composer Olufur Arnalds, but his music had too much hope. I am settling on Jon Brion's collecting things. Think it suits for a title sequence, and it makes sense that it is J. Brion because he collaborates with Charlie Kaufman on a number of films, so his music (although from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) fits well.

Man Becomes Puppet

One of the themes of the t.s. is going to be man becoming puppet. It alludes to the theme of the movie and will be done in a textbook way.

I looked at Wes Anderson's style of shooting and cmae across the term 'rostrum camera'. Want it to be like a puppeteer's book, as stated in an earlier blog post. Make it similar to opening of R.Tenebaum's, with a darker side.

Will also use psychology images showing it as if it is a science. This will fit in nicely with the already created images in the film, and pose too add more insight into the film.

This is a good style for the theme of the t.s. It is dark enough and is a fun style to work with. Because everything is of a similar tone, it makes everything more subtle. You can hide clues in the t.s. without them being too obvious, something fun to watch many times because you understand more and more the more you look at it.

Here are two more recent images. This comes from a style that I have been developing from the last project. It comes from old textbook style graphics. Like that seen in The Royal Tenenbaums, there is a certain quality that I like about it.(Like how the title 'Royal Tenenbaums' appears as if it is a book being checked out of the library.) Maybe it's 1970's scholarly writing. I think it fits with Being John Malkovich, same level of quality, of reality.

When there is this style it makes design more believable, like it was actually in existence somewhere.

Magritte Animation

In thinking about a topic for a possible tv show, Magritte, the surreal artist comes to mind. I would be a fun visual style to work with, the potential tv show being about his works coming to life. There could different appraoches, from live action filming to try and capture his paintings using my surroundings, or motion graphics, animating in and out of the different elements of his work.

Good story line, as if Magritte is standing at the window, seeing the world in reference to his paintings. I am not crazy about the execution, the color pencil style drawings, and would stick with using his actual paintings to deconstruct and animate.

here is someone who has use the actual artwork, but the transitions and timing are sloppy. Faster transitions, and a more clever approach to how the paintings combine.

desperate housewives, like the way that the classic paintings come to life, and the transitions in between scenes.

Eureka intro, not bad, not bad at all. I have never seen the show, but the opening piqued my interest, so it has done its job. The budget allotted to the opening seems well spent. The imagery of using normal day to day scenes, with a futuristic twist made me want to see what kind of a society the characters in Eureka live in.

Royal Tennenbaums Trailer

Couldn't find the opening to Royal Tenenbaums, but there are pieces of it in the trailer. It consists of all the characters as if in a play, listed with their names and the character's names. It is shot to make it look like they are looking into a mirror. Very nice idea, then alone, how they see themselves. Gives a good insight as to who the characters are, and how they choose to see them selves. Eli Cash (Owen Wilson) appears to be the most vain out of the bunch, because he is placing his hat in a very distinct way, whilst Margot (Gweneth Paltrow) seems distant, staring into the mirror frankly, uncaring, which matches her personality in the movie. This coupled with location, gives the viewer a sense of how the character's spend their time (at the salon, getting a face mask...) It serves as a good into into the film, as the movie picks up from the last opening credit, back to following a script.

Here is an example of strong visual style, that also contains meaning. Here, it does not give away a major plot, like in mystery/horror title sequences, but uses the numbers and names (coupled with a brief piece of music that alludes to a certain personality type) to bring the viewer into the movie. Then within the art of the t.s. certain elements help create an idea of what is to come (playing cards). Perhaps the style is driven by the bright lights of Las Vegas, kind of show lights, taking it to another level by making them into design elements.

Not going by the rules that I found the other day, in the previous title sequences for movies Saul Bass, a pioneer in title credits, made it an art form. Below, the man with a golden arm, uses graphic elements, which neither set up for a story, not allude to what will happen in the plot. Instead it sets a graphic tone, a style for the movie to use on posters and to brand it. Interestingly done, and def. innovative, but if I choose a movie title sequence, I would hope to make a graphic style, along with furthering the plot, by using signs and symbols in the t.s. or key elements.

Heroes opening credits are short but sweet. Although not lengthy, the imagery fits in with the theme of the show. Nice transition from globe to eye, easy on the viewer as it transforms into the same shape. Like 'i met the walrus' transitions, or those from shrek 2, it is a nice way to change symbols.

Run Lola Run: Title Sequence using different mediums to engage the viewer. Starting with the clock, which could be the opening title sequence on its own, to traveling inside of the clock makes for a surreal opening. Then the intro into human insights and philosophy gets the viewer thinking. The transition into cartoon is strange, adding more surreal elements where you don't know where the narrative will take you. Perhaps it gets the viewer ready for a strange movie, I have not seen it, but I found it visually confusing. In 'the kingdom' opening they mixed different mediums together in a seamless way, making the colors between the modern graphics and the old news real match. In this opening, my brain has to work harder to connect the concepts, so I would not opt to do this in my own opening t.s.

Sahara utilises a specific location to allow viewers to get to know the characters. By putting it in the intimate setting of an office, adorned with personal photos, it builds a 'real' feeling into the story. It makes the film believable, as if this is a real character with a real life. This also helps to give clues as to what the character does, i.e. military training, as seen in picture of main character in uniform. The song either sets the tone of the movie, or adds to the visual clues of the office, perhaps the character would listen to that song. Then the globe transition into the story sets location, as is seamless in transition. Good overall t.s.

Scooby Dooby Doo 2: Again with branding changed the viewer's attention is trying to be caught. The title's take teh color of the scooby dooby doo brand, along with the song remixed, sets a 'beware' tone, like haloween. Maybe there will be ghosts in the movie because the titles evaporate, or maybe it is just turning into mist. Then we go to the city, to set location with the occasional terydactal coming into frame. Ans then the transition to the opening sequence. Not entirely my cup of tea, but it is effective.

She's the Man: typical.

Shooter: beautiful cinematography gets location and is visually pleasing. It leads into the first scene establishing context. If it weren't for the music I would have no other insight into the movie. I guess this is a way to entice the viewer, so that they have no frame of reference for the plot. I don't think I will try this kind of opening out, doesn't do much for me.

Signs: This t.s. does nothing for me. They could have done so many things with it, instead of making the focus the headliners. They could have done a really cool t.s. using crop circles, or alien paraphenelia, instead of the strange lights on screen. Wank.

Oh, I hear epic music, and it's only paramount's brand that is on screen! It seems vaguely familiar, yet different than superman. There are the lines on screen coming in and out of focus and then the name of the movie, coming out of the clouds. Not saying much for the film, except that it is in the clouds and I know the movie is about pilots. Meh.

Spider Man 3: Cool, webs, webs and more webs. Nice touch on the letters that make up the crews names 'jumping from one web to the other, slighty turning to reveal that red color that we know as spider man. I guess the movie is already sold the third time round, so they are just playing with the visual language of the previous comic books and movies, to bring the viewer up to speed and remind him that spider man is a human spider that shoots webs and fights crime.

The first title sequence gets the viewer in the mood for what is to come. The driving styles can be reflected in the personalities of the character's names. It adds to the narrative and allows an premature access into the character's identity, through the way they drive and interact with the other character's names. I have not seen the film, but I would imagine that the designers profited from knowing the story.

23 title sequence is nice in that it makes the audience part of the conspiracy. It gives facts along with names of the cast, making the viewer question if the facts are merely a coincidence or part of a greater conspiracy with which the movie deals with. It makes the viewer pre-sympathetic to Jim Carrey's character, which is what is needed for a good film.The style of using the courier type face (usually connected to typewriters, books and user-made content {a published book need not use typewriters for mass production}) coupled with blood allude to a danger that will come in the film.

Blue velvet- does not give any insight into what is to come, except the connection of curtains to the tile "Blue Velvet". Room for improvement.

Charlie and the chocolate factory: Like how even before the title sequence there is a rendering of the production companies names. It seems that when this is done it catches the viewer's attention by taking a previously seen brand, and making it part of the film pulling viewers into the narrative.(SImilarly done in the Matrix, which grabbed my attention when I first saw it) Then, with use of Danny Elfman's audio, the anticipation is highered. As the viewer is pulled into the factory to see the process of the chocolate being made, through the delivery it shows a background to the story that enriches the later narrative, because the audience begins to believe in the factory that it could be a real place. I like the title sequence, effectvely carried out, but it seems like Tim Burton had recieved too high a budget for the movie. The title sequence in Edward Scissorhands is very similar, taking the audience through a work of a factory, yet the style has the grit of Tim Burton's earlier work. It seems more real, instead of pretty 3d animation.

Final Destination 3: Typeface consist with carnival theme, and the audio adds a foreshadow of doooooooom. If it was 1950's bandstand playing in the background, then it would be an entirely different film. (Probably one with kids, cotton candy and a love story. Hopefully not all intertwined for then the theme could be construed with a touch of irony.)

The Grudge: Colors, theme music, the hair all let the user guess what they are expected to be afraid of. The symbol of the hair is key in the story, so they did a good job at alerting the audience of this danger before hand. Saves them some work.

I have not seen this next film, so it makes for a good deconstructing of the title sequence. I am guessing that the movie is going to follow a death, because the title sequence (from here on 't.s.') is following a coffin around a town. Perhaps a body has been taken. The music alludes to mischief, someone has done something wrong. Maybe something like a murder, and the body has to be hidden in different locations, or someone is trying to find the location of said body. Maybe something to do with architecture, because it has a city plan, either than or it takes place in the suburbs, maybe the main character is an average joe. Now I shall look on imdb and try to find the film...Ah death at a funeral I was wrong. "A coffin is transported from the mortuary to a family home in the English countryside while the credits roll. Daniel (Matthew Macfadyen) opens the coffin for a last look, the wrong person is inside. The drivers, embarrassed, go back and bring the correct one." It was tying in with the narrative, so that the film need not shoot that part of the movie.

***There are the t.s.'s that tie in with the narrative, in line with the opening scene so that the viewer has context, or those that have key symbols (23 the grudge) that alert the viewer to look out for certain items, or themes like thank you for smoking which use symbols that tie into the plot, but done give anything away, just a visually pleasing t.s.

Dirty Dancing: Shows dirty dancing in the t.s. and also the typeface that branded the movie name. Hot Pink perhaps because it was done in the 1980's and there were bright colors that identified with the youth of the age, or perhaps because it is a color that symbolises girls. The dancing in it is sexual and intriguing. Ohhh, I sound like a creep.

Elf: Type face is fun and playful, not the typeface for a bank, so fun and playful movie coming your way. The picture book = kids, snowflakes winter, illustartions christmas, along with soundtrack. Right style, and for the kind of movie that does not require any heavy thinking or analysis of the plot, it is a good t.s.

Fantastic 4: Gets the brand down, right away. Then furthers the plot by showing the characters using science, which they do in the film. The style is that of a comic book, alluding to the previous form of the story.

The Family Stone: Christmas, the names of the actors in combination speak loudly about the content of the film, heartwarming, like romantic comedy, probably about family and love at christmas.

The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy: bringing the viewer into the narrative-the book start out in the same way. By the time the intro is over the audience is wondering what the impending doom of the planet is. Also the alluding that there is another animal that is smarter than either the dolphin or man early in the film gives a hint as to what is to come, whilst not being too obvious about it. The song is very cute as well, as if the dolphins are singing.

Poseidon: Starts underwater, foreshadowing being underwater, and continues the anrrative, showing a man running on the ship, which matches the introduction of the movie.

It seems like most scary movies use t.s. that foreshadow what is to be afraid of. This one seems like internet, coupled with voices as if they are being listened to, maybe the viewer has to be afraid of stalker/hackers. I'm guilty of being intrigued. I guess you wouldn't need to use this tactic in a happy movie, because you are not solving a mystery along with the characters. You are not supposed to be guessing what is coming next, but being in the passenger seat.

The Kingdom: Good use of graphics with old news feed. Almost seamlessly tied, gives factual information that helps the viewer if they don't know enough about the topic. What they need to know to go into the film.

Lucky Number Slevin: ties in t.s. with introduction to the film. There is a type of sportscast in the background in the first scene. It is not done obviously, so that you are given clues, but need to put them together to understand what is going on, congruent with the movie. It is a mystery, so you need to gather as many crumbs as the filmmakers leave behind. Perhaps this is congruent with all mystery title sequences, that they match the theme of the movie. In the movie you will need to dissect the plot, so in the t.s. you need to dissect the clues.

Mission Impossible: Theme music to brand it, gives you spies, government officials, time running out, character faces and perhaps insight into what they do.

Over The Hedge: Makes viewer sympathetic to actions of main character. The names are part of the scenery, to blend in and not take so much away from the action going on. Makes the actions of a raccoon understandable, thingslike crossing the road and eating the food at picnic sights (things that might have been frowned upon by humans because it makes a mess). It anthropomorphices the animal, getting the viewer ready to be sympathetic to animals.

Here is the original title sequence for 12 monkeys.I like the style and art of the sequence, but lacks a story. It is a good piece of design, but could have told a stronger narrative.

This new one, done by a fellow youtuber, is simple, but intrigues the viewer and sucks them in, whilst still keeping with the original style of the movie's title sequence.

Opening like this pique's viewer's interest. Not knowing what it is about, or how it relates to the film keeps audience guessing. I also like the continuity of the film, how the trailer leads the viewer directly into the movie.
